A floresta amazónica está a desaparecer a um ritmo cada vez mais veloz. Só entre Agosto de 2003 e Agosto de 2004, a desflorestação atingiu o segundo valor mais alto de sempre, afectando mais de 26 mil quilómetros quadrados no espaço de um ano, o equivalente a um terço da superfície de Portugal.

Na origem do abate de milhares de árvores está, entre outros factores, o objectivo de aumentar a área de plantação de colheitas, o desenvolvimento industrial e urbano, crescimento turístico e a construção de infra-estruturas. No Estado de Mato Grosso, - onde ocorreu quase metade desta desflorestação -, a exótica vegetação amazónica deu lugar a campos de soja.

The Amazon forest is disappearing at a rapid pace. Only between August 2003 and August 2004, deforestation has reached the second highest ever, affecting more than 26 thousand square kilometers in a year, equivalent to one third of the area of Portugal.

The cause of the slaughter of thousands of trees are, among other factors, the aim of increasing the area for planting crops, and industrial development, urban growth and building of tourist infrastructure. In the State of Mato Grosso, - which was almost half of this deforestation - the Amazon exotic vegetation gave way to fields of soybeans.
